Background. The object of the study is acoustooptical modulators included in information-measuring systems based on laser acoustooptical interferometers. The subject of the research is the processes of interaction of optical and acoustic waves in an optically transparent medium, and in particular, the process of light diffraction on a periodic acoustic wave. The aim of this work is to identify the dependence of an optical signal from the acoustooptical modulator output on parameters of optical and acoustic waves and the acoustooptical interaction zone.
Маterials and methods. The research of the processes of interaction of optical and acoustic waves in an optically transparent medium was carried out by the method of harmonic analysis using the Fourier transform and the method of the perturbation theory.
Results. The article considers the mechanism of light diffraction on a periodic acoustic structure, determines directions of light propagation by diffraction of light waves from a diffraction grating and shows the general solution for a field and a spectrum of scattered radiation by the method of the perturbation theory. Insights. The quality of information-measuring systems depends on the characteristics of the optical radiation after the acoustooptical conversion. Parameters of  optical and acoustic waves, as well as the area of acoustooptical interaction significantly influence the characteristics of the optical radiation. Therefore, it is necessary to calculate the optimal characteristics of optical and acoustic waves and the acoustooptical interaction zone, when designing a laser measuring system with acoustooptical transformation.
